We have big plans for a proper root cellar. We know we could harvest all manner of delicious food in the summer and tuck it away in a proper root cellar for use weeks – or months – later when food choices become more constrained.
It is the peculiar rhythm of the Farmers Borden that our big food preparation for Thanksgiving happens the Friday after Thanksgiving, not Turkey Day itself. That’s why I was outside preparing to smoke a turkey at 5:15 this morning.

The first sign was holes in the hay we keep between rows on Veg Hill. Dozens of them, about 3 1/2 to 4 inches in diameter, stopping at the cardboard below the hay.
We’ve been watching through the row cover, but now the insects are less of a problem, so we pulled the row cover on Sunday. Our fall veg looks great!
Friday night the forecast called for a possible frost, so we decided to pull the sweet potatoes. We ended up with much more than we did last year, but we’re still disappointed.
All it took was one night of 31 degree temperatures to lay waste to most of our summer veg.
